Route 114 Bridge Replacement over Sag Harbor Cove Nominated for 2001
NYSDOT Context Sensitive Design Award
"This project represents smart government at
it's best."
—Governor George Pataki

Each year, the New York State Department of Transportation holds a
"friendly competition" among its regional offices for the State's
Context Sensitive Design Award. Each region chooses its best example of
a project representing excellence in engineering combined with careful
sensitivity to local issues.
On Long Island, NYSDOT Region 10's choice for 2001 is the Replacement
of the Route 114 Bridge over Sag Harbor Cove, designed by Lockwood,
Kessler & Bartlett, Inc. Not only did LKB provide a design that was
sensitive to the historic character of the bridge and its importance to
the local community, but we also provided invaluable photo-realistic
presentation materials to help the agency and the community make key
decisions about how the new structure should look.
The newly-constructed bridge carrying Route 114 over Sag Harbor Cove
from the hamlet of Sag Harbor to the North Haven peninsula replaces a
64-year-old deteriorated structure of surpassing historic grace and
elegance. The new bridge looks much like the old, with the added benefit
of modern construction techniques. This was of the utmost importance to
local communities, which shared a nostalgic attachment to the bridge.
The "grass roots" public involvement process helped residents to claim
the new bridge as their own.
With sensitive engineering design, advanced display aids, intelligent
traffic management, and more, LKB is proud to have played its part in
this local success story.
