LKB provided comprehensive design Phases V & VI for highway and
bridge design, survey and mapping, and a Safety & Operational Study for
the reconstruction and improvement of 4.3 kilometers of the Cross
Westchester Expressway, including the design of roadway lighting and
preparation of MPT drawings.
The project required development of alternatives for mainline capacity
improvements. Each was evaluated for traffic flow efficiency,
construction costs, effects on local and intersecting roads, aesthetics,
and impacts on local communities. LKB, working with NYSDOT Region 8 and
our consulting partner firm, participated in public hearings and
information centers, as part of a detailed public outreach program
involving local governments, agencies, and community groups.
As part of the project, LKB performed the inspection and load rating of
eight bridges and prepared design plans for three of the bridges
included in the project. Notable project constraints included a New York
City Aqueduct that passed under the roadway at a shallow depth. This
required special load spanning techniques to carry new bridge footings
for widened structures beyond the point where increased loading would
influence the aqueduct roof slab. Also, the relocation of a high
pressure gas main that crossed the travel lanes for the project’s entire
length and overhead high tension lines which crossed the roadway at
minimal clearances required extra care in setting the roadway’s vertical
alignment. |
